PPR Pipe Pressure, Temperature and Grade Guidance and Selection
PPR pipes are mainly divided into six series: S6.3, S5, S4, S3.2, S2.5, and S2. They correspond to different pressure levels according to the total system usage (design) coefficient C:
When C=1.25, the corresponding nominal pressures are 1.0, 1.25, 1.6, 2.0, 2.5, and 3.2MPa. When C=1.5, the corresponding nominal pressures are 0.8, 1.0, 1.25, 1.6, 2.0, 2.5MPa. The more common pipe series are S5, S4, S3.2 and S2.5. However, since the service life of PPR pipes will be significantly shortened at higher temperatures, when selecting hot water pipes, it is generally recommended to choose a pressure level one level higher than the pressure level of cold water pipes. Generally, hot water pipes use S3.2 and S2.5 series, while cold water pipes use S5, S4 and S3.2 series.
When C=1.25, the corresponding nominal pressures are: S5-1.25MPa, S4-1.6MPa, S3.2-2.0MPa, S2.5-2.5MPa, S2-3.2MPa.
When selecting cold water pipes, if the water temperature does not exceed 60°C for a long time and the system working pressure is, for example, 0.8MPa, then increase the water pressure by 0.25MPa (industry experience) to 1.05MPa. Then multiplied by the safety factor 1.2 (determined according to specific circumstances), it is 1.26MPa. If it exceeds S5 (1.2MPa), you should choose S4 (1.6MPa), and so on for higher pressure levels.
When selecting hot water pipes, if the water temperature exceeds 60°C for a long time, you can start directly from S3.2 (2.0MPa). For example, if the system working pressure is 0.8MPa, then the nominal pressure is calculated as (0.8+0.25)*1.2=1.26MPa. In this case, S3.2 (2.0MPa) should be selected. If the system working pressure is 1.5MPa, the nominal pressure is calculated as (1.5+0.25)*1.2=2.1MPa, and S2.5 (2.5MPa) should be selected. If the system working pressure is 2.2MPa, the theoretically allowed S2 (3.2MPa) is very close. For safety reasons, PPR pipes should not be selected; instead, metal pipes should be considered.
