Socket Fittings and Adapters
A pipe fitting slips over the outside of two pipes to connect them. Fittings can be either reducer fittings or reducing fittings, where the flow is reduced by connecting a larger pipe to a smaller pipe. Adapters are used to connect two different types of pipes. For example, an adapter can be fitted to the end of a normal pipe to allow a threaded connection at the other end of the adapter, or to connect a polyethylene pipe to a pipe of another material such as copper.

Bushing Pipe Fittings
Bushings, sometimes called reducer bushings, are used to connect two different sized pipes. The larger diameter bushing is installed inside the larger diameter pipe. The smaller pipe is then inserted into the smaller end of the bushing.

Flange Fittings
A flange is a flat round fitting that can be bolted or clamped to form a tight seal. They are used when piping passes through walls, ceilings and floors. They are also used in electrofusion installations to connect valves to main lines.

Pipe Cap Fittings
Pipe caps are fitted at the end of a pipe to stop the flow of water or gas. These fittings can be used at the permanent termination point of a pipeline or temporarily to shut off a supply in plumbing or pipework.

Plug Fittings
A plug at the end of a pipe used to seal an opening, similar to a pipe cap. The difference between the two is that a plug can be inserted into a threaded pipe opening to seal it, while a pipe cap can be placed over the opening. They are commonly found in the cleanout location of sewer systems.

Joint Fittings
Fittings are short sections of pipe with external threads on both ends, used to connect two pipe ends or fittings with internal threads.
