EVOH Layer Construction

Quality EVOH‑barrier pipes are produced as either:

1.Three‑layer construction – PEX / adhesive / EVOH (outer layer). The EVOH is exposed, requiring careful handling to avoid moisture damage before installation.

2.Five‑layer construction – PEX / adhesive / EVOH / adhesive / protective PE layer. The outer polyethylene jacket shields the EVOH from mechanical abrasion, UV exposure, and moisture during storage and installation.

Five‑layer pipes offer greater durability and are increasingly preferred for demanding environments such as concrete embedding or rough construction sites.

Fitting Systems

PEX EVOH pipes can be joined using several connection methods, but compatibility must be verified:

Expansion fittings (cold expansion) – Primarily used with PEX‑a. The pipe is expanded, the fitting inserted, and the connection shrinks to form a tight seal.

Crimp / press fittings – Widely used with PEX‑b. Stainless steel rings or press sleeves are compressed with calibrated tools.

Push‑fit fittings – Can be used with both PEX‑a and PEX‑b if the manufacturer specifies compatibility.

Critical note: Never mix fitting brands with pipe brands unless the combination is certified. Different cross‑linking methods result in slight dimensional and mechanical differences that can compromise joint integrity.

Manifold Systems

For underfloor heating, PEX EVOH pipes are typically connected to distribution manifolds. The manifold should be constructed of corrosion‑resistant materials (stainless steel or brass) to match the oxygen‑barrier system. Proper balancing valves and flow meters ensure even heat distribution.

Embedding and Insulation

When embedded in concrete screed or plaster, five‑layer EVOH pipes are preferred because the outer protective layer resists alkaline environments. Thermal insulation may be required under floor slabs to prevent downward heat loss. The pipe's smooth inner surface maintains consistent flow even with tight bending radii.
