PEX‑a EVOH Pipe
Advantages
1.Superior flexibility – Manufactured using the peroxide method, PEX‑a has the highest degree of cross‑linking (>70%) and excellent flexibility. It can be cold‑bent to tight radii without springback, reducing the need for fittings.
2.Outstanding thermal memory – If kinked during installation, gentle heating with a heat gun restores the pipe to its original shape without compromising integrity.
3.Excellent oxygen barrier – The EVOH layer (often 5‑layer construction) effectively prevents oxygen ingress. This protects metal components in hydronic systems from corrosion.
4.High resistance to creep and stress cracking – The Engel cross‑linking process creates strong carbon‑carbon bonds, giving PEX‑a superior long‑term strength under pressure and temperature cycling.
5.Smoother inner surface – The extrusion process yields an exceptionally smooth bore, reducing friction losses and scaling, which helps maintain energy efficiency over decades.
Applications
1.Underfloor heating (radiant floor) systems – Its flexibility allows easy serpentine layouts, while the EVOH barrier protects boilers and pumps in closed loops.
2.Hydronic radiator connections – Used for both supply and return lines in central heating systems.
3.Domestic hot and cold water distribution – Where local codes permit PEX‑a for potable water, the EVOH layer is often included to protect water heaters and other metal components.
4.Snow melting and ice prevention systems – Embedded in driveways or ramps, it withstands glycol‑based antifreeze.
5.Industrial process piping – For transporting non‑aggressive fluids where oxygen exclusion is required.
Repair and Maintenance
1.Repair – Damaged sections can be cut out and spliced using compatible expansion fittings (the preferred method for PEX‑a) or crimp/press fittings. Thanks to thermal memory, minor kinks can be repaired by heating with a heat gun and reshaping.
2.Maintenance – No routine maintenance is required for the pipe itself. Periodic checks of fittings, especially after installation, ensure no leaks have developed. The EVOH barrier does not degrade under normal conditions, but if the outer layer is damaged, the barrier may lose effectiveness.
PEX‑b EVOH Pipe
Advantages
1.Higher initial strength – Produced by the silane (moisture‑cure) method, PEX‑b generally has a higher short‑term burst pressure and better resistance to chlorine in potable water applications.
2.Good dimensional consistency – The manufacturing process yields very uniform wall thickness and diameter, which can simplify fitting selection and installation.
3.Lower cost – PEX‑b pipes are often more economical than PEX‑a, making them a cost‑effective choice for large projects.
4.Effective oxygen barrier – When co‑extruded with an EVOH layer, PEX‑b provides the same high level of oxygen protection as PEX‑a, ensuring corrosion protection in closed‑loop systems.
5.Wide availability of crimp/press fittings – Most PEX‑b systems rely on crimp rings or press sleeves, which are widely available and familiar to many installers.
Applications
1.Radiant floor heating – Especially in projects where initial cost is a primary consideration, PEX‑b EVOH pipe is commonly used.
2.Hydronic heating systems – Suitable for connecting boilers, manifolds, and radiators where oxygen barrier is required.
3.Potable water distribution – PEX‑b is approved for drinking water in many regions; when EVOH is added, it is often used in combination systems (e.g., combination potable and heating).
4.Plumbed‑in fire sprinkler systems – In some residential fire protection applications, PEX‑b is used with an oxygen barrier to protect metal sprinkler heads.
5.Commercial hydronic systems – For larger‑diameter distribution, PEX‑b EVOH offers a balance of performance and affordability.
Repair and Maintenance
1.Repair – Damaged sections are cut out and repaired using crimp or press fittings. Unlike PEX‑a, PEX‑b does not have thermal memory; kinked sections cannot be repaired by heating and must be cut out and replaced.
2.Maintenance – The pipe itself requires no maintenance. Inspect fittings periodically, especially in areas subject to vibration or thermal cycling. The EVOH layer remains effective as long as the outer jacket is intact.
