The strengths and applications of CPVC Piping

Advances in technology have brought about dramatic changes in piping systems. With the introduction of PVC pipes, the popularity of metal pipes and large I-pipes used for building plumbing declined. The benefits of using PVC pipes as compared to ordinary pipes are time-tested. However, with further developments in technology and materials science, many other PVC variants have come on to the market. CPVC is one such variant.

CPVC stands for Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride. It is a thermoplastic material made by chlorinating polyvinyl chloride, i.e. replacing some of the hydrogen with chlorine. CPVC pipe is simply PVC pipe with chlorine added to its composition. Simply put, CPVC pipe is PVC pipe with chlorine added to its composition. CPVC pipe can contain up to 60 per cent chlorine, but it does not adversely affect the water flowing through the pipe. On the contrary, it increases the toughness of the product.

Durability

CPVC piping has been proven to last more than 50 to 75 years. It was first installed in the United States in 1959 after its invention. Some of the first pipes installed are still in use today. Polyvinyl chloride pipe is strong, flexible and corrosion resistant. These properties further enhance the durability of CPVC.
