Understanding BST Threaded UPVC Fittings
BST threaded UPVC fittings are made from unplasticized polyvinyl chloride, a strong plastic resistant to chemicals and corrosion. The threaded design allows for easy assembly by screwing parts together, eliminating the need for adhesives or welding. These fittings are commonly used in water supply, irrigation, and industrial piping due to their durability and ease of maintenance.
Tools and Materials You'll Need
Before starting, prepare all necessary tools and materials: BST threaded UPVC fittings (such as elbows, tees, and couplings), UPVC pipes, a pipe cutter or saw, PTFE thread seal tape (also known as plumber's tape), an adjustable wrench, and a cleaning cloth. Having everything ready beforehand makes installation more efficient.
Preparing Pipes and Fittings
Cut the UPVC pipes to the desired lengths with a pipe cutter or saw. Be sure the cut ends are smooth and free of burrs. Clean both pipe ends and threaded areas of the fittings with a cloth to remove dirt and dust. Clean surfaces are essential to create tight seals and prevent leaks.
Applying Thread Seal Tape
Wrap PTFE thread seal tape around the male threads of each fitting clockwise, covering the threads evenly with about 3 to 4 wraps. This tape fills gaps between threads, preventing water leakage. Avoid wrapping too thickly as it can make threading difficult.
Assembling the Fittings
Screw the male threaded fitting into the female fitting by hand, making sure the threads align properly to avoid cross-threading. Once hand-tightened, use an adjustable wrench to secure the connection firmly but do not overtighten, as excessive force may crack the fittings or damage threads.
Testing for Leaks
After assembly, turn on the water supply gradually and inspect all joints carefully for leaks. If you spot any drips, try tightening the fittings slightly. If leaks persist, disassemble, reapply thread seal tape, and reassemble the connection to ensure it is watertight.
Maintaining Your Installation
To extend the lifespan of your BST UPVC fittings, avoid exposing them to harsh chemicals or extreme temperatures. Regularly check the system for signs of wear or leaks, especially in outdoor setups. Thanks to their threaded design, these fittings are easy to disassemble and replace without disturbing the entire piping network.
